Master of Education (Teaching and Learning Languages)


This qualification offers educators at all levels thorough engagement with our current understanding of language acquisition and learning, language curriculum design and language policy.

Through the programme, educators will engage with the current national and international research and literature in additional language teaching methodology, programme and curriculum design, and assessment, while also enhancing their inquiry and research skills.

Online Learning

The Teaching and Learning Languages endorsement serves the professional development needs of a variety of teachers engaged in languages teaching, including:

early years, primary and secondary teachers, and ESOL specialist teachers, who are working with students who are recent migrants, including Pasifika students, or international students;
teachers of EFL and other languages who are seeking a language teaching qualification, including native speakers of languages other than English;
generalist primary teachers who may now be teaching language to their students as a result of the introduction of the new Learning Languages area of The New Zealand Curriculum (2007);
teachers who are supporting Maori students in transitioning from immersion/bilingual programs into English medium contexts; and
school leaders supporting teacher learning, curriculum development, and/or policy implementation for engaging diverse learners

The Master of Education (Teaching and Learning Languages) consists of six courses totalling 120 points: EDEM631, EDMM632, one restricted optional courses from the Schedule below and three optional course from the MEd Schedule A totalling 120 points.

Duration

120 point pathway: the minimum period of enrolment for a full-time candidate is 12 months and the maximum two years; for a part-time student, the minimum is 18 months and the maximum three years.
Entry requirements

Postgraduate certificates and diplomas require a relevant bachelor’s degree. If you gained your qualifications overseas, these will need to be assessed to ensure they are of an equivalent standard.

Candidates must be approved as a candidate for the diploma by the Dean of Education. The relevance and standard of undergraduate studies and any subsequent professional work experience are the main criteria of approval.

You are also required to meet UC’s English language requirements.

IELTS Academic with an average score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking
TOEFL iBT total minimum score of 90, minimum score of 20 in writing
TOEFL PBT with a minimum score of 575 and TWE with a minimum score of 4.5
CCEL EAP Level 2 with a minimum B+ grade
CPE with a minimum B grade
Pearson Test of English (Academic) – PTE with an overall score of 64 and no PTE communicative skills score below 58.
