The Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (PGCertTESOL) is an ideal fast-track qualification for those who may have come to the career of English language education through an indirect route and wish to undertake professional development or for graduates interested in entering the TESOL profession. It is also an ideal pathway to further postgraduate study in this discipline.

The programme and its courses are relevant for educators working in many kinds of English language development settings in New Zealand and internationally, including the education of emergent bilinguals who are speakers of Maori, Pasifika and other heritage languages.

Graduates from the programme will gain:

research-informed understanding of some of the history, current state and future trends of English language learning
an understanding of theories, practices and politics of second language acquisition and language teaching and learning
the ability to design and implement English language learning activities, experiences, lessons, units and courses
an appreciation of linguistic and pedagogical innovation and change in learning environments and contexts.

This programme is taught entirely online, so is an ideal fit for people who are currently working or are based overseas.
Duration

120 point pathway: the minimum period of enrolment for a full-time candidate is 12 months and the maximum two years; for a part-time student, the minimum is 18 months and the maximum three years.
Qualification structure and duration

The programme comprises 60 points in two compulsory 30-point courses. The coursework involves assignments, activities, project work and research.

There is flexibility in order of courses, so students can start in July or November. This Postgraduate Certificate will usually be completed within 12 months part-time (and can be studied up to two years part-time).

EDEM615 Learning and Teaching Languages
EDEM631 Foundations of Language Acquisition

Entry requirements

Normally the minimum requirement is a three-year bachelor’s degree from a New Zealand university, or a qualification or combination of qualifications considered to be equivalent. If you gained your qualifications overseas, these will need to be assessed to make sure they are of an equivalent standard.

You are also required to meet UC’s English language requirements.

IELTS Academic with an average score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking
TOEFL iBT total minimum score of 90, minimum score of 20 in writing
TOEFL PBT with a minimum score of 575 and TWE with a minimum score of 4.5
CCEL EAP Level 2 with a minimum B+ grade
CPE with a minimum B grade
Pearson Test of English (Academic) – PTE with an overall score of 64 and no PTE communicative skills score below 58.
